Louisville Railway Company
The P.C.C. car brought new advancements ib streetcar design 5000 were produced until 1952 in the United States by St. Louis Car and Pullman. Toronto, Philadelphia, Boston and San Francisco maintained large fleets into the 90's CHZ Tatra pf Prague bought a PCC license, and built 18,680 PCC-based streetcars of the Tatra T1, Tatra T2, Tatra T3 and Tatra T4 models thousands are in service today in Russia and the former eastern block.
The "Canadian Light Rail Vehicle" was an attempt at a new, standardized streetcar design to be used in Toronto constructed 1977 to 1981 for a total of 196 streetcars its sister The Articulated Light Rail Vehicle was constructed 1987 to 1989 52 units were built by Bombardier. Both car types are being replaced by a new fleet of streetcars by the Toronto Transit Comission. Any of these cars could be made ADA complant and totaly revamped for a Louisville streetcar system providing 25 to 30 years service
Operation Without Wires
The Savanah River Streetcar was converted to power its traction motors with an onboard biodiesel-fueled generator and batteries as a hybrid drive for an additional $100,000. Hence it is a form of diesel railcar. the same could be done here in Louisville eliminating the cost of construction of overhead electric wires
